SPC Risk Guide

How the severe risk levels work

Read SPC outlooks in two parts: the percent is the chance of that hazard near you, while CIG tells you how intense it could get if it happens.

SPC source
Thunderstorms No severe expected

Lightning and heavy rain can still happen.

1 - MRGL Isolated severe

One or two storms may briefly turn severe.

2 - SLGT Scattered severe

More than a few storms could be severe.

3 - ENH Numerous severe

Severe storms are more organized or intense.

4 - MDT Widespread severe

Significant severe weather is likely.

5 - HIGH Major outbreak

Widespread, intense severe weather is expected.

Simple way to read the tables: Find the hazard percent on the left, then move across to the CIG column. Example: a 10% tornado risk with CIG2 becomes ENH, while a 2% tornado risk with CIG2 becomes SLGT.
CIG1 Intensity Level 1

Tornado: EF2+ possible. Wind: 74+ mph gusts possible. Hail: 2 inch or larger hail possible.

CIG2 Intensity Level 2

Tornado: EF3+ possible. Wind: bow echo or derecho possible. Hail: giant hail around 3.5 inches or larger possible.

CIG3 Intensity Level 3

Tornado: EF4+ possible. Wind: derecho-level wind damage possible. Hail: SPC does not use CIG3 for hail.

Live Tracker

National outage map

Open the public outage tracker in a new tab for the latest utility-reported outages across the U.S.

Why external

Keeping it legal and stable

The live nationwide county-level outage feeds are not exposed as a stable free public API, so this page links straight to the public tracker instead of scraping a blocked service.

Quick use

Best workflow during storms

  • Use Radar for storm placement and warning polygons.
  • Open the outage tracker when damage or strong wind moves through.
  • Compare outage clusters with your active warnings and reports.
